Can a stent treat a 100% blocked artery?
The boulder is known as a Chronic Total Occlusion in cardiology (CTO). It indicates that the artery is completely blocked. This occurs in 15% to 20% of heart disease patients. However, because only about 3% to 5% of these patients have a stent or bypass procedure, there is an urgent need to assist these untreated patients.
Failure to diagnose and treat a CTO can cause symptoms and have a negative impact on your quality of life.
The consequences of a complete blockage
Artery blockages are not all the same. It is much easier to treat an artery that is 97% blocked than it is to treat one that has been 100% blocked for a long time.
When arteries are completely blocked, a new blood supply can form around the blockage. This new blood supply, known as collaterals, will not provide as much blood to your heart. This can result in the same chest pain and shortness of breath symptoms.
Treatment
We only had one treatment option for Chronic Total Occlusions fifteen years ago: try to probe a wire through the blockage from the front. Because these procedures had a 70% to 75% success rate, some doctors refused to recommend treatment.
We now have more treatment options. We can sometimes work our way around the blockage or back through the heart. We are now seeing success rates ranging from 90% to 95%.
If you are told that you have a completely blocked artery, you should know that it can be treated.
