Difference between Left and Right Heart Failure

AS per the Heart Failure doctor in Delhi NCR  Heart failure can occur on either the left or right side of the heart, or on both sides. The main distinction between left-sided and right-sided heart failure is the side of the heart that is weakened. Left-sided heart failure occurs when the left side of the heart weakens, reducing the heart’s ability to pump blood into the body. The right side of the heart is weakened in right-sided heart failure, resulting in fluid in your veins and swelling in your legs, ankles, and liver.

Heart Failure on the Left Side

The more common type is left-sided heart failure (also known as left ventricular or LV heart failure). The left ventricle is unable to efficiently pump blood out to the body in this condition. This is due to either the ventricle’s inability to exert sufficient force to move the blood or the ventricle’s inability to relax properly between beats and allow itself to fill with blood.

The symptoms of left-sided heart failure

  • Shortness of breath
  • Fluid buildup in the lungs

Heart Failure

Causes Left-sided Heart Failure

Heart failure typically begins on the left side, specifically in the left ventricle, your heart’s main pumping chamber. Heart failure frequently occurs after another condition has weakened the heart

Right-sided Heart Failure

As per Best Heart Specialist in North Delhi Right-sided heart failure (right ventricular or RV heart failure) can be caused by issues such as lung disease, but it is most commonly caused by left-sided heart failure. The accumulation of blood in the lungs causes the right ventricle to overwork and eventually fail.

Symptoms of right-sided heart failure

Abdominal swelling (including the liver and gastrointestinal tract)

Swelling in the legs and ankles

Cause of right-sided heart failure

Heart failure frequently occurs after the heart has been weakened by another condition.

high blood pressure

Is it possible for left-sided heart failure to progress to right-sided heart failure?

As described by Best Cardiologist in Fortis Hospital Shalimar Bagh Left-sided heart failure occurs when the left ventricle of the heart weakens and is unable to pump blood as efficiently into the body. Fluid can flow back into the lungs as a result of the decreased ejection fraction, putting additional strain on the right side of the heart. This could result in right-sided heart failure.

Factors Predisposing to Left or Right-Sided Heart Failure

Any of the risk factors listed below may be enough to cause heart failure on its own, but combining them can significantly increase risk. Heart failure risk factors include:

  • Coronary artery disease (CAD)
  • The heart attack
  • Valve disease of the heart
  • Blood pressure that is too high
  • Heartbeat irregularity
  • Heart defect at birth
  • Diabetes Medication for Diabetes
  • Using alcohol
  • Obstructive sleep apnea
  • Using tobacco or smoking
  • Obesity
  • Infections caused by viruses

Symptoms and Diagnosis of Heart Failure

Aside from the symptoms listed above, left and right-sided heart failure can cause:

  • Gaining weight quickly
  • A chronic cough
  • Fatigue
  • Palpitations in the heart
  • Neck veins that protrude
  • Pulse irregularity

Any of the following conditions can weaken the heart and lead to heart failure:

  • Heart attack and coronary artery disease
  • Blood pressure that is too high
  • Heart valve problems
  • Muscle damage in the heart
  • Muscle inflammation of the heart (myocarditis)
  • Congenital heart defect (a heart defect that is present at birth)
  • Heart rhythm irregularities (arrhythmia)
  • Diabetes
  • HIV
  • Thyroid hyperactivity or hypothyroidism
